Leading the ethical organisation
James Dennehy, former Assistant Director in Charge - New York Field Office, FBI

What would you risk in order to do the right thing? Our guest speaker in this session, Jim Dennehy, risked his career to stand by his principles. Jim was Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s New York Field Office when he came under pressure from the Trump White House to identify agents involved in investigating the January 6 Capitol rioters. His response? An email to 38,000 FBI employees urging them to stay true to the organisation’s values: “Today, we find ourselves in the middle of a battle of our own, as good people are being walked out of the FBI and others are being targeted because they did their jobs in accordance with the law” he wrote, adding the decision to remove senior FBI officers had spread “fear and angst” within the ranks. That was January. By March, he had been forced from his job leading 2500 staff at the FBI’s largest field office. We’ve asked Jim to share his thoughts on ethical leadership, focused on how organisational values can be retained and promoted regardless of individual leaders.
